Israel’s star guard Shay Doron perhaps summed it up best when she brandished the national women’s team’s EuroBasket campaign as “embarrassing” following its 74- 51 defeat to Great Britain in Bydgoszcz, Poland on Monday.
The blue-and-white’s defeat was its third straight in the European Championships, meaning it ends the event bottom of Group B. Israel lost its games by an average of 22 points, and is still without a EuroBasket win since 1991.
The national team has reached the last three continental championships, but Monday’s loss was its 20th straight in the main event and Doron had no excuses for the side’s displays in Poland over the last three days.
“Everyone tried to do what they could, but it was no where near enough,” Doron said. “We each need to sit down and think what we could have done better.
We need to come back and do better next time. Our three games were embarrassing. Considering the way we played we didn’t deserve to be here.”
Israel took an early lead on Monday, but a 15-0 run by the Brits gave them a 23-11 margin which the blue-and-white never threatened to close.
Doron led the team once more, scoring 15 points, with Liron Cohen adding 11 for Israel, which shot just 30.9 percent from the field in the tournament.
“The girls gave their all, but we still expected more from ourselves,” coach Eli Rabi said.
“We didn’t play well and the better team won. We faced some strong teams and when you aim high like we do you have to take into account that sometimes you might get thrashed.”
