Shahar Pe'er proved again on Tuesday that she can play with the big girls, but that wasn't enough to guide the Israeli teenager to victory. Pe'er lost in straight sets to former world No. 1 and Wimbledon champ Maria Sharapova 7-6(2), 6-1 in the fourth round of the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, California. Pe'er caused problems for Sharapova and even earned a set point in the opening set, but the 18-year-old Russian saved and fought back to send the set into a tiebreaker, which she won easily. Sharapova dominated from that point on, winning in one hour and 29 minutes. Pe'er, is still alive in the doubles event, where she's partnering Australian Bryanne Stewart. They were scheduled to play the tournament's three seeds, Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain and Meghann Shaughnessy, for a spot in the quarterfinals on Wednesday night after press time.
