Soccer players in an Israeli-Arab town near Nazareth will be playing in a newly renovated stadium come this season's start in September.
The NIS18-million renovation and expansion of Doha Stadium in Sakhnin was completed this month. The stadium, nicknamed "Peace Stadium" to represent peace between Arabs and Israelis, is the official stadium of the Bnei Sakhnin soccer club.
The renovations include the addition of 3,500 new seats (there were 5,000 before) and two more parking lots with about 400 spaces, groundwork and landscaping around the stadium, a 1,500 square-meter commercial area with food services, changing rooms and sports and fitness areas, along with technological improvements to the security system.
The Qatar National Olympic Committee and the State of Israel funded the renovations, which began in 2007. The initial construction of the stadium in 2005 was funded primarily by the state.
