Softball: Tigers, Cerveceros grab maiden victories

In an exciting week of Israel Softball Association action, the Tigers downed Dimona 5-1 for their first win of the season. In other games, Dimona handed Penticon their first loss, 4-3, Ziontours came back to beat the Galil Twisters 15-14 and the Cerveceros edged Shimshon Hi Tech 7-6. In a women's game, Beit Shemesh crushed Dimona 21-4. Tigers 5, Dimona Mean Judeans 1 On Sunday, the Tigers rebounded from a big loss with solid pitching from Goose Gillett and airtight defense which turned two double plays. Ilan Spira did most of the damage on offense for the Tigers, going 4-4 with a big three-run homer off of hurler Yarone Ben Israel. Ziontours 15, Galil Twisters 14 On Monday, Aviv Yaakov singled in the game winning run in the bottom of the sixth in a thrilling comeback victory over the Twisters. The Twisters scored seven in the first off pitcher Blair Portnoy, but Ziontours answered with four. The game stayed close until the fifth when the Twisters went up 13-7 with a big five-run inning. However, Ziontours answered with a six-spot, tying it on a steal of home by Gil Siegel after Portnoy's RBI hit. The Twisters scored one in the sixth on Micah Winston's RBI single, his fourth hit of the night, but he then was put out trying to take an extra base on a wild pitch. Ariel Gilor's sacrifice fly tied the game and set the stage for the game-winning hit off pitcher Bill Arscott. Cerveceros 7, Shimshon Hi Tech 6 Yosi Ajzenwaser fanned seven to lead the Cerveceros to their first win of the year. Cerveceros, who had trailed the whole game, scored two in the bottom of the sixth when the Shimshon outfielders muffed a pair of fly balls. Gadi Bossin pitched well enough to win, whiffing three while only walking one. Alberto Tascher smacked a pair of hits for the Cerveceros and centerfielder Saul Kaim saved the game with a beautiful catch with his back to home plate. Beit Shemesh Fireballs 21, Dimona Lady Judeans 4 On Sunday, the Fireballs exploded offensively against Dimona and playing errorless ball. Pitcher Meirav Eisenberg was brilliant, striking out six, making a diving catch and tagging a Dimona runner out trying to score from third on a passed ball. Shortstop Minna Wolf more than earned her keep by driving in seven runs from the clean-up spot for Beit Shemesh.
