Anya Gostomelsky came within four hundredths of a second of a bronze medal on Saturday at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Debrecen, Hungary.
The 26-year-old Israeli finished fourth in the 50 meter backstroke in a time of 27.54 seconds, fractions behind Austria's Fabienne Nadarajah. Croatia's Sanja Jovanovic won the race in a world record time of 26.50s, with Janine Pietsch claiming the silver medal (27.11s).
On Friday, Gostomelsky, who won the bronze medal in the 50m backstroke at last year's short course championships, came-up just short in the 100m backstroke, finishing in fourth position. A time of 58.72s was 57 hundredths away from the German Pietsch, who ended the race in third position. Laure Manaudou claimed the gold medal in a time of 57.34s, with Jovanovic finishing in second place (57.94s).
Miki Malul ended the 50m breaststroke in sixth position on Saturday, clocking a time of 27.28s. Ukrainian Oleg Lisogor won the gold in a time of 26.75s. Also Saturday, Guy Barnea qualified for Sunday's 100m backstroke final, recording the sixth fastest time in the semifinals and breaking the Israeli record (52.07s).On Friday, Barnea finished the 50m backstroke final in seventh position (24.18s) and Amit Ivry ended the women's 50m butterfly final in seventh place (26.75s).
