After going more than five months without playing in the last eight of an ATP Tour tournament, Dudi Sela advanced to his second quarterfinal in three events in Atlanta on Wednesday.
Sela, ranked No. 94 in the world, recorded an impressive 6-2, 6-4 win over American Sam Querrey (61) in just 62 minutes.
Despite notching eight aces to none and winning 86 percent of points on his first serve, ninth seed Querrey won just six of 26 second serve points, allowing Sela to break four times in the match.
The Israeli will face No. 4 seed Vasek Pospisil (39) in the quarterfinals on Friday, with the Canadian beating qualifier Illya Marchenko of Ukraine 7-5, 6-3.
The last time Sela reached a semifinal of an ATP Tour event was back in March 2012.
Julia Glushko (102) failed to join Shahar Pe’er in the quarterfinals in Baku, Azerbaijan on Thursday after falling to a 6-2, 7-6 (2) defeat to Italy’s Francesca Schiavone (75).
Pe’er (90) will face Stefanie Voegele (72) in the last eight on Friday after the Swiss player stunned No. 1 seed Sorana Cirstea (29) 6-1, 6-1 on Thursday.
Pe’er, who will be playing in her first WTA Tour quarterfinal since April, is aiming to emulate her performance in Baku from last year when she went all the way to the final.
The Israeli has already progressed to the semifinals of the doubles tournament with Romanian partner Raluca Olaru, claiming a 6-1, 6-1 win over French duo Amandine Hesse and Pauline Parmentier on Thursday
