Women's Flag Football: Big Blue caps perfect season with title

On Monday night at Kraft Stadium, WAFI kicked off its championship game with a highly-anticipated matchup between Big Blue and Phone4Less, Burgers Bar. While all bets were set on Big Blue choking, the top-seeded club made up of national team players used the boos to motivate itself even more and emerged on the winning end of a 21-0 shutout to cap the first perfect season in WAFI history. Phone4Less, Burgers Bar won the coin toss and chose to receive the ball. As both teams lined up, staring each other down with intense burning desire in the players' eyes, it was impossible to tell who wanted it more. After a scoreless first quarter, Big Blue star receiver Estie "Baseball" Bernstein caught a bomb touchdown pass from quarterback Shana Sprung for the first points of the evening. The extra point attempt was caught by Ayelet Wartelsky, who made a spectacular grab, one of many throughout the game. With the game still at 7-0, Elissa Sagoskin decided it was time to show her true colors. She excused herself from the game and went to put on her game face, literally. Whether it was due to intimidation or just cosmic luck, seconds later Elissa had an interception. The defenders must have enjoyed Elissa's rear better than her front, because they watched her return that pick all the way to the house for a TD and a 14-0 lead. Since Baseball was first to score, she also had to be last. As the minutes were becoming ticking down, she picked the ball off and, between various spins, tricks, and fake outs managed to dodge every opposing player on Phone4Less, Burgers Bar for the final TD of the WAFI '09 championship game. With seconds left on the clock, Phone4Less, Burgers Bar, dying to leave their mark on the game somehow, intercepted the ball and ran it downfield. But they were stopped just inches shy of the goal line by a diving Yael Freedman. Just then the final whistle was blown, bringing an end to both the game and another wonderful season of WAFI football.
