Revenue for the hotel industry rose 19 percent to NIS 6.1 billion in 2005, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) said Monday. Foreign tourists contributed to NIS 2.2b. of the total, up 43% from 2004, but still 24% lower than in 2000, a peak year for tourism in Israel.
The total turnover at the country's hotels last year, however, was just 6% less than in 2000, when the industry generated NIS 6.5b. in revenue, boosted by the NIS 3.8b. spent by Israelis last year.
The CBS said the number of people employed in the country's hotels rose 7% from 2004 to an average 23,500. The average wage of workers in the industry was NIS 5,500 per month in 2005, 2% higher than the previous year.
