A senior Kansas lawmaker came under criticism after posting a video on Facebook praising Nazi leader Adolph Hitler.
According to a report in the New York Daily News on Thursday, Kansas State Rep. Peggy Mast, who serves as the Republic House speaker Pro Tem, wrote “Great quote from Hitler in the video. Please listen to it closely. His words are profound! Let’s start using discernment.”
The post was quickly removed, but not before catching the attention from fellow political officials.
Christie Krieghauser, the chief of staff to Kansas House Speaker Ray Merrick responded online, “Sorry, I’m confused ... how is there a great quote from Hitler?"
The video itself was of a testimony given by anti-abortion activist Gianna Jessen criticizing Planned Parenthood a US House Judiciary Committee hearing, the Daily News report said.
In the video, Jessen quoted Hitler as saying "The receptivity of the masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan.”
Mast later explained that the post was a criticism of the US women's healthcare provider Planned Parenthood. "Planned Parenthood uses the same tactics and deception as Hitler regarding the destruction of innocent lives," she said in a statement. "I was not in any way agreeing with Hitler's words."
"Rather, I was making a connection between his words and the arguments made by Planned Parenthood. Both are deplorable and heartbreaking."
