Haifa's Institute for Marine Studies wants to know if there are environmental problems killing marine mammals and fish in the area.

The frozen bodies of two dolphins that died recently and washed up on Netanya's Sironit Beach and the Ma'ayan Zvi Beach, respectively, were brought to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa earlier this week for examinations to determine the cause of death.
The hospital said it was asked by the University of Haifa's Institute for Marine Studies to examine the dolphins, whose bodies were frozen for preservation. The institute wants to know if there are environmental problems killing marine mammals and fish in the area.
One of the dolphins, of a Mediterranean Sea variety, is 120 centimeters long and was beached in Netanya in March 2006. The second, a spotted variety 190 centimeters in length, was discovered at Kibbutz Ma'ayan Zvi exactly a year ago.
The tests, including X-rays and magnetic resonance imaging scans, were conducted at night so as not to interfere with the care of human patients.
