Agriculture Ministry tightens supervision on animal feed production

The Agriculture Ministry has tightened conditions for granting permits for animal feed production.

The decision to increase supervision on the production process occurred after Veterinary Services studied about 30 random samples of animal feed from 10 mills across the country. Researchers found that approximately 60 percent of these mills contained residues of veterinary drugs and infection causing contaminants, the ministry explained.

As a result of the findings, the Agriculture Ministry has determined that mills will now receive permits only after abiding by new regulations similar those in Europe. The mills will be required to perform examinations in order to ensure that the feed mixtures do not contain medicinal residues above the legal limit. In addition, the mills will need to demonstrate the effectiveness of their equipment cleaning processes, the ministry said.
