Israel is here to strengthen the Jewish people in the face of resurgent antisemitism, Zionist Union MK Hilik Bar said at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate on Sunday night, 80 years after Kristallnacht.
Bar, the grandson of a Holocaust survivor, spoke at a demonstration against antisemitism and for Israel on the anniversary of the mass pogrom against Jews throughout Nazi Germany. The event was organized by Christians for Israel Germany, the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem and several other organizations.
“Unfortunately, we see antisemitism rearing its head again,” Bar said, adding that after last month’s shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh, it is clear that this is an international problem.
“I came here to mark 80 years since Kristallnacht, a night marked by a rampage of violence, hatred and murder of Jews in Berlin and throughout Germany, a night that began with broken glass at synagogues and Jewish-owned businesses, and ended in the gas chambers in Auschwitz,” he said.
The difference between then and now is Israel, Bar added.
“Today we have the State of Israel as a safe and strong home for Jews throughout the world,” he said.
