The Acre Festival of Alternative Theater will take place in the Old City of Acre from December 22-25. The festival, which usually takes place over Succot, had to be postponed because of the Arab-Jewish violence that broke out on the eve of Yom Kippur.
"There is no tension at present," said festival producer Albert Ben Sheloushe. "I think that the lesson was learned, and that reason will prevail over emotion."
Because of the date change, those taking part in the festival include the nine plays in competition as well as free street theater (under cover because of the weather) from Israeli companies.
The competition plays include Potato Patch, a play with music, in which a family dreams of life beyond the confines of its potato patch and a war that may or may not be over. Masik, by Nahad Bashir, to be performed in Arabic and Hebrew, wheels through 24 hours in the lives of three women whose menfolk are gone; and in the peripatetic Donkey Funeral, the icon-bashing Honi Hama'agel takes on the religious rituals surrounding death.
Long-time mentors and supporters of the festival, Professor Shimon Levi and Dr. Shimshon Shoshani will receive Yakir Acre Festival awards.
