The directors of all recognized museums in Israel met with Chairwoman of the Museums Council Prof. Ruth Ben-Israel last Thursday for the first time. The reinstated council discussed pressing issues for the country's museums, namely: access, preservation, support, legislation and finances.
There are currently 53 legally recognized museums in the country, and another 150 that would like to be designated as such. A council subcommittee has been tasked with visiting institutions around the country to consider granting them recognition as official museums.
