The Jerusalem Khan Theater is mounting Dani Horowitz's The Chinese Knife-Grinder that first premiered in 1984. It's adapted from The Owl, the 1975 collection of short stories by Nissim Aloni. In it, a young lad growing up in Tel Aviv learns to his eternal cost that his childish dream of blowing up the world with a mirror turned to the sun has never been an option. The director is Mor Frank. Horowitz, 68, dramaturg, director and playwright, has written 25 plays, among them An Amazing Deed, which won Best Production at the 2000 Acre Festival. Aloni (1926-1998) is considered a pioneering local author and playwright whose often allegorical and poetic works won critical and popular acclaim. The play opens May 9.
