Making her local debut, prize-winning Chinese soprano Hui He sings the title role in the Israeli Opera revival of Puccini's Tosca, playing at the Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center from April 21 to May 6.
Directed and designed by Hugo de Ana, the production debuted at the Israeli Opera in 2000 and was a huge hit. The revival director is Yulia Pevsner. The current production will be conducted by our own Daniel Oren, who last conducted here 12 years ago.
Sharing the role of Tosca will be rich-voiced Michele Crider, last seen here as Marguerite in Mefisto. Tenors Pierro Giuliacci and Rubens Pelizzari - his local debut - will sing Cavaradossi, while villainous police chief Scarpia will be sung by baritones Alberto Mastromarino and Silvano Carolli, the latter also making his first appearance here.
Some of Puccini's most glorious tunes are part of Tosca. Scarpia lusts after the great diva, but she's in love with Cavaradossi, a painter and revolutionary. He's arrested, but Scarpia promises Tosca that if she becomes his mistress he will spare the painter's life. Tosca agrees - and stabs him. Cavaradossi is shot, and Tosca jumps to her death from the battlements. Tickets are disappearing like snow in summer.
