The Knesset Finance Committee decided on Tuesday that a tender for Channel 10 would be issued, following the channel's inability to meet its financial obligations and programming requirements, even though the current tender does not expire until January 2010. The Second Broadcasting Authority will convene at the beginning of next week to decide on the outlines for the tender.
Communications Minister Ariel Attias had asked for a three-month extension to allow the channel to rearrange its NIS 103 million-debt to the state, but the committee overruled him.
The tender would still allow the current operators of the channel to compete for control; whoever wins will run the channel for the next two years.
