A Nation on Reserve Duty, a documentary series by Yalon Gurevitch, begins airing Thursday at 9:40 p.m. on Channel 1. The eight-part series follows one reserve unit from the moment it gets its call-up orders until its return home. The reservists are a microcosm of Israeli society: There's a Tel Aviv bar owner, a secular businessman who grew up ultra-Orthodox, a religious man who was opposed the withdrawal from Gaza, etc. The series examines the complex and close relationships among the soldiers, and also follows their families as their wives cope with the pressures of functioning as single parents, all the while worrying about their husbands' safety. It also looks at the reservists' parents and how their fathers in particular shaped their attitudes toward military service.
