A Hollywood thriller featuring an Israeli actress topped the US box office this past weekend, taking in nearly twice as much money as its nearest competitor.
Vantage Point, a big-budget drama about a plot to assassinate the American president, brought in an estimated $24 million between Friday and Sunday, despite receiving reviews that ranged from lukewarm to downright dismissive. In addition to Sigourney Weaver, Dennis Quaid and 2007 Oscar winner Forest Whitaker, the film showcases Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer in a key role, with the Tel Aviv-born performer playing a mystery woman who may be a paramedic - or part of the film's terrorist conspiracy.
Set in Salamanca, Spain, Vantage Point features Zurer speaking Spanish and English, and marks the 38-year-old's second Hollywood production after Steven Spielberg's Munich, in which she played the wife of a morally conflicted Mossad agent.
The star of a number of Israeli films and TV series, Zurer won her homeland's highest acting honors for playing the title character in 2003 film Nina's Tragedies, and for her portrayal of a lovesick therapy patient in the 2005 TV series In Treatment.
