FILM 1. Lost at Sea
Robert Redford stars in J.C. Chandor’s gripping action film All Is Lost as a resourceful sailor who finds himself staring his own mortality in the face after colliding with a shipping container at sea. Deep into a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, with his navigation equipment and radio disabled, he sails into the path of a violent storm, using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, and is forced to rely on the ocean currents to carry him into a shipping lane in hopes of hailing a passing vessel.
2. Walk on the Wild Side
The Tel Aviv Cinematheque is holding a tribute evening in memory of American singer/musician Lou Reed tomorrow at 9 p.m. The event will open with a screening of Time Rocker, a documentary that follows reed from his days with The Velvet Underground, through his solo career and his involvement in other projects. The film includes rare interviews with reed and other artists such as David Bowie, Patti Smith and Suzanne Vega. Following that, there will be a screening of his Berlin concerts and a live band playing reed’s greatest hits.

3. Mecanto hits Barby
The legendary Dutch hard rock, postpunk band Mecano returns to Israel after more than two decades, with a concert at the Barby club in Tel Aviv on December 20 (doors open at 10 p.m.). established in Amsterdam in 1977, the group quickly gained success, releasing two albums – Untitled and Subtitled – and developing a cult following throughout europe.

4. Bowing to Winter
The annual Keshet Eilon winter seminar for violin and viola players will take place at kibbutz eilon in the Western Galilee from December 19 to 21. The seminar features an impressive teaching lineup, including violinists Itzhak rashkovsky, Mila Feldman and Hagai Shaham, and viola teachers Zvika carmeli and Lilach Levanon. renowned American violinist and teacher Miriam Fried will also be on hand to lead a master class on December 20 that will be open to the public. The program also includes a concert for the public at 9 p.m. on December 20 entitled “Ani Schnarch and Friends,” featuring the Tiadam Trio of violinist Schnarch (pictured), pianist Sara Tal and cellist Michal Schmidt performing works by Beethoven, Brahms and Ben-Shabtai.

5. Opening performance
Ethiopian vocalist Mahmoud Ahmed will give the opening concert of the annual Hullegeb Israeli Ethiopian Arts Festival in an Israeli premiere on December 19 at 9 p.m. at the Jerusalem Theater. One of the most popular ethiopian vocal artists and musicians, he has become world renowned.
He will perform with a nine-member Israeli combo led by saxophonist and vocalist Abate Berihun, who played alongside Ahmed for more than a decade.

5. Spirit of Music
Turkish musician Omar Faruk Tekbilek will perform at the Tel Aviv and Jerusalem branches of the Zappa club tomorrow and Saturday, and at the Haifa Auditorium on Sunday. Tekbilek has been composing and performing music for more than 40 years, offering more than just his sonic excellence to audiences around the world. 7. Honoring Wagner
The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra will perform a concert of richard Wagner’s music on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Jerusalem Theater in honor of the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth.
The JSO’s musical director Frederic chaslin will conduct, with solo singers efrat Ashkenazi and Shiri Heshkovitz.
There will be a symposium on Wagner on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
8. Piano at the Y
Pianist Angela Hewit will give a recital within the framework of the Jerusalem YMcAmeri concert series on next Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the Jerusalem YMCA.
She will also give master classes for young pianists at Mishkenot Sha’ananim on Tuesday and Wednesday.

9. Strength and Fragility
The solo photography exhibition titled “Sharon Derhy – room” opens tonight at 8 at the Artstation Gallery in Hatahana compound in Tel Aviv and will run until January 25. Derhy’s first solo exhibition includes works from three series, presenting images of beauty and femininity, embodying both strength and fragility. Using a film camera, Derhy avoids the sharpness and clear borders of digital photography, seeking instead soft transitions and merging.DANCE
10. Kolben's gate to Mandelbaum
The kolben Dance company will perform its new production, Charlie Mandelbaum, at the Suzanne Dellal center in Tel Aviv tomorrow at 10 p.m. and on Monday at 9 p.m. The choreography was devised by company founder Amir kolben. The concept behind the show addresses the idea of borders and divisions between different worlds, such as physical barriers and emotional-psychological and social boundaries.
