I'm a Zimmerman

I'm sitting in the expansive inner courtyard with Jay, my heterosexual male soul mate. We're on our third whiskey sour, each. They've all been delicious. "Man, why can't we ever meet women," he asks me while signaling the waitress for another round. I don't have an answer. Such are our nights. We meet, go out and swear to one another that the time has come, that this night will be different from all other nights. No fears. No hesitations. It's two hours later and Jay's flirting with the waitress. But, here at the Zimmerman, we come often enough that she takes it with style and grace. "I think she likes me," Jay says to me. "No, she doesn't," I respond, not even bothering to remind him that, as a waitress, she pretends to like everyone. I take another bite of my toast and push the bowl of edamame towards Jay. Food's decent for a bar. Adi enters the courtyard, a smile on her face and a bigger one spreads across Jay's as he greets her, "Hey gorgeous!" Hoping to spread his alcohol induced good cheer, and since it's relatively cheap, he orders her a Feigling sour. I ask for a half-liter of Guinness. "You losers still alone?" Adi asks, taking a moment to laugh at our sorry state. We take not offense but comfort in the additional voice Adi provides to our already witty bar-banter. We're also sitting pretty on a big couch, just like I've got at home - another indispensable comfort. A girl comes over asking for a light. She smiles and, with her lit smoke, returns to her table and waiting boyfriend. "To hell with all this, man," I tell my companions, "I'm just happy to be here with you two." Jay nods while Adi sips her drink. Life's good and not one of us dares break the bond of this spoken lie.
