Rising jazz vocal star Robin McKelle will be in the country on January 17 and 18 for a four gig tour at the Einav Center and Zappa club in Tel Aviv.
Although twenty-something McKelle released her debut album Introducing Robin McKelle only this year, she has been performing across the world for some time. To date, she has shared stages with such iconic members of the jazz fraternity as Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, as well as enjoying some extracurricular outings with some of the world's top rock and pop acts such as David Bowie and Carly Simon.
Judging by the range of cuts on her album, the singer has wide musical interests. Her commensurately jaunty version "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen", for example, incorporates salsa inflection and grooves along with the original Yiddish-oriented intent. Then her take on the Harold Arlen standard "Something's Gotta Give" reveals a remarkably mature approach that alludes to the telling influence of Ella Fitzgerald.
Her relatively tender age notwithstanding, McKelle's vocals seem to come straight out of the jazz heyday of the 1940s, enhanced by the tight big band arrangements on the CD. On her Tel Aviv dates McKelle will be accompanied by pianist Alain Mallet, double bass player Peter Slavov and drummer Jaz Sawyer.
