A bill outlawing cigarette vending machines passed in the ministerial committee on legislation on Sunday, making it likely that it will soon be passed into the law by the Knesset.

The bill's sponsor, National Union MK Uri Ariel, said it was important to safeguard teenagers from the vending machines, which cannot be monitored. He said the bill was fair to adult smokers, because it does not prevent them from purchasing cigarettes from kiosks that are open all night. Ariel started smoking as a teen and stopped smoking six years ago.
