Bar-Ilan physicist Benjamin Ehrenberg dies at 68

Bar-Ilan University announced the death of Prof. Benjamin Ehrenberg, a noted physicist and vice president for research at the university, on Wednesday. Ehrenberg, 68, an active member of the faculty for 35 years, died from cancer.

“This is a tremendous loss to Bar-Ilan in general and the physics department in particular,” said physicist and former rector Prof. Yosef Yeshurun.

“Prof. Ehrenberg strove for scientific excellence, personal excellence, and institutional excellence, and all of his work at Bar-Ilan was aimed at achieving these goals.”

Ehrenberg earned his PhD from the Weizmann Institute of Science in 1977 and was awarded the Feinberg Graduate School Prize for his research.

After post-doctoral research at Cornell University, he joined the faculty of Bar-Ilan in 1980, where he established a research group in biophysics.

Over the course of his career, Ehrenberg held several academic- administrative positions, including chairman of the Department of Physics, chairman of the Graduate School for Master’s Students, chairman of the PhD Graduate School.

“Benny was one of the pillars of the Physics Department in scientific excellence, in both his research and his teaching, in the personal integrity he brought to everything with which he came in contact, ” said Prof. Michael Rosenbluh, chairman of the Department of Physics.
