Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Wednesday morning expressed his anger over the “unwarranted” announcement by an Interior Ministry committee of the approval to build some 1,600 housing units in northeast Jerusalem’s Ramat Shlomo neighborhood.
A statement from his office said the announcement at this current time was “damaging” to negotiations with the Palestinians, which it called "a vital Israeli interest.”
Defense Ministry officials added that Israel had acted for many months to build trust between the two sides in order to launch negotiations, and that “our practical steps should take this into consideration."
