China lodges official complaint against India PM's visit to disputed border territory

China has lodged an official complaint against a visit by Indian Prime Minister Darendra Modi to Arunachal Pradesh, a border region claimed by both countries and that was briefly occupied by China in 1962.

On Saturday China's vice foreign minister communicated to the Indian ambassador to the People's Republic of his government's opposition to visit.

In a separate statement the Chinese official provided more insight into Beijing's grievance.

“The Indian side's insistence on arranging activities by leaders in the disputed region infringes on China's territorial sovereignty and interests, magnifies the dispute on the border issue, and violates the consensus to appropriately handle the border issue".

On Friday, Modi had arrived in Arunachal Pradesh to oversee the opening ceremony of a train line and power station, infrastructure that has been developed in conjunction with China, with the latter investing billions of dollars in the projects.
