Drive-by shooting kills man, wounds one in downtown Lod

A local Lod man was shot dead in a drive-by shooting in the center of the city on Wednesday night, police from the Shfela subdistrict said.

The 43-year-old man was hit by a number of rounds to the upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene, while a male relative who was with him was lightly wounded and rushed to Assaf Harofeh hospital by passersby at the scene on Sokolov street in the city.

Shfela subdistrict police said that while at the moment it appears that the shooting isn't related to some sort of underworld dispute, rather “family-related”, in the terminology of police. This is despite the fact that both men are “known to police”.

At the moment police have made no arrests but have fanned out in the city in an attempt to find the shooter, Shfela police said. They added that they have not determined what type of firearm was used.

In the most recent shooting in Lod, city council candidate Abed Azbarga was shot and badly wounded the night before elections by a masked man who walked into an open house he was holding in a house in the center of the city, opened fire, and fled on foot.
