EU seeks meeting with Iran on nuclear program as soon as possible

The European Union wants to meet with Iranian officials as soon as possible to discuss fresh proposals from Tehran on how to deal with its nuclear program, which western officials may be geared toward creating nuclear weapons. EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said late Friday that he was in contact with Teheran to arrange "a meeting at the earliest possible opportunity." The EU, as part of a group of six powers dealing with Iran, wants to assure officials in Tehran that it wants to engage in talks to reach a positive outcome. The EU has warned Iran that it could not continue to ignore appeals to provide information about its nuclear enrichment program and has said that a confrontation and tougher sanctions could lie ahead if the standoff continues.
