A huge explosion rocked the Haifa bay on Sunday morning, after fuel tankers at the Bazan refinery went up in flames.

A large number of emergency crews are en route to the scene, with some fire crews already dealing with the blaze.

According to preliminary reports by the Ministry for Environmental Protection, the explosion occurred during the emptying of benzene tanks. Pollution warnings have not yet been updated, however the thick black smoke emanating from the site will raise fears in the city.

Haifa bay is home to a number of chemical, oil and gas refineries. The Bazan group refinery is Israel’s largest integrated refining & petrochemicals complex.
