TEHERAN, Iran — An Iranian state TV official has confirmed that one of its correspondents is among those arrested in Italy in a suspected arms trafficking case.
Iranian TV foreign news director Hasan Abedini said in a broadcast Thursday that the state TV's Rome correspondent, Hamid Masouminejad, was arrested in the case.
Italian police said Wednesday that two Italians and five Iranians, including the reporter, were detained in the case, and two additional warrants had been issued for Iranians.
They displayed weapons they said were to be sent to Iran through third countries to avoid an international embargo. Abedini said the arrests were meant to serve Iran's enemies, like Israel. He said the state TV would hire a lawyer to defend the Masouminejad, who's 51.
