Iran detains senior reformist Karroubi, closes opposition office

Iranian security agents have arrested a prominent reformist and closed the offices of an opposition party probing abuse of those arrested in the country's post-election crackdown. Esmaeil Gerami Moghaddam, a spokesman for the National Confidence Party, said security agents sealed the party offices in Teheran on Tuesday. He said the agents confiscated documents concerning the party's probe into the prisoner abuse allegations. The party is led by Mahdi Karroubi, who ran against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the disputed June presidential election. A top Karroubi aide, Morteza Alviri, said he was detained during a raid on his home Tuesday. He said over the phone: "I'm being taken away by security agents right now."
