Knesset approves bill permitting free weekend parking at bus stop

Knesset approves bill pe

A bill permitting free parking at bus stops on Saturdays and holidays was approved by the Knesset plenum on Monday. The new law, which will come into effect in May 2010, is intended to help solve the problem of scarce parking spaces available in the big cities at weekends. According to the bill, drivers will be permitted to park their cars in bus stop zones from 8 p.m. on Friday evenings until 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Knesset Finance Committee chairman Ophir Akunis (Likud), who sponsored the bill, said he believes in legislation that benefits the public. "This is a bill that will benefit a very large public. Most bus lines do not run on Shabbat, so there is no reason that parking at bus stops should be forbidden," Akunis was quoted as telling Channel 10.
