Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman said Sunday that the time had come for Israel to topple Hamas rule in the Gaza Strip.

Speaking ahead of the weekly cabinet meeting in Tel Aviv, Liberman said, "The only thing left to do is defeat Hamas, clean up the territory and get out as quickly as possible."

The foreign minister said that the minimum demands being presented by Hamas in negotiations for a long-term truce to end hostilities are far beyond the maximum that Israel is willing to agree to.

Liberman said that the government would be better off now had it adopted his position, that Hamas must be toppled, from day one.
