Locusts in Israel reach sexual maturity, spawning stages

The locusts now in Israel are largely reaching the sexual maturity and spawning stages of their lives, the Agriculture Ministry reported on Sunday. While no new swarms had entered the country on Sunday as of the evening, Agriculture Ministry and Israel Nature and Parks Authority teams were still spraying already present bands of locusts, the office said.
As the locusts continue to enter Israel through the Egyptian border – which they have been doing for nearly two weeks – workers will continue to spray them but will refrain from doing so right now in open spaces even if mating is occurring, the ministry said. The teams will monitor swarms located in these spaces, but because larvae are not able to fly until a month after hatching, they can wait to spray as needed, the ministry said.
