Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal welcomed on Tuesday the deal to release Gilad Schalit in exchange for prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli prisoners, saying the deal was a testament to Palestinian unity.

Mashaal explained that Israel will release 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, intitially 450, and then another 550 in the final phase of the deal.
