Mexico played down concerns of a Zika outbreak in the country ahead of the wet season, with Deputy Health Minister Pablo Kuri announcing a woman with a confirmed case of the virus gave birth to a healthy baby.

The suspected link between the Zika virus and two neurological disorders, the birth defect microcephaly and Guillain-Barre syndrome, has worried many across the Americas. Brazil is at the centre of the outbreak, with over 4,000 suspected cases of babies with the disorder.

In Mexico, six pregnant women have been confirmed as infected with Zika. But in a breakthrough for research, one infected woman gave birth to a clinically healthy baby in Chiapas state, raising questions of the causal link between Zika and the disorder.
