US President Barack Obama on Wednesday spoke before the 66th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, calling on the UN Security Council to impose sanctions against the Syrian regime.

"The Syrian people have shown dignity and courage vying for values that this institution is supposed to stand for," he stated, saying the US had sanctioned the brutal Syrian regime but that was not enough.

Obama also slammed Iran for refusing the rightsa of its own people.
