Victor Visilayev, who was convicted for committing a series of brutal sex crimes in Haifa between 2007 -2009, was sentenced to 22 years in prison and two years probation by the Haifa District Court on Sunday. Visilayev was also ordered to pay a total of NIS 110,000 in compensation to three of his victims.

The judges decided to place on Visilayev a harsh sentence in part because of the severity of his crimes and in par to send a message of strict enforcement to any would be rapists.

The defense had asked for a lenient sentence in light of Visilayev’s clean criminal record, his willingness to confess to committing the crimes and the fact that his confession spared the victims from having to re-live the experiences by giving testimony in court.
