Shas leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef to undergo back surgery

Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, spiritual leader of the Shas movement, was hospitalized for the second time in seven days on Sunday and is expected to undergo surgery in his back on Monday it was reported by haredi website Kikar Hashabbat.

Yosef was taken to hospital last Sunday because of severe back pains and was diagnosed then with a fracture in his lower back, most likely caused by a fall the rabbi suffered about a month ago.

Doctors at Hadassah Ein Karem hospital were reportedly reluctant to perform surgery on Yosef because of his advanced age, but are now set to go ahead with the operation.
