Top Democratic lawmaker: US won't default on debt

WASHINGTON- A senior Democratic lawmaker said on Thursday that he wanted to reassure financial markets that the United States would not default on its debt and that the White House and Congress would reach a deal to lift the country's borrowing limit.
Congressman Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 Democrat in the House of Representatives, expressed confidence in the ability to reach an agreement as he spoke to reporters after a meeting with US President Barack Obama.
