US President Donald Trump said that a congressman who was shot and wounded by an unknown gunmen during a Republican baseball practice on Wednesday will "fully recover."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected," Trump added.

Steve Scalise, the House Majority Whip, along with five others were hit by gunfire after an unidentified shooter carried out a "deliberate attack" against Republican politicians and aids during a baseball practice at a YMCA facility in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia.

The victims were reportedly taken to a nearby hospital to treat their wounds following the attack.
