Turkey's president said on Friday the Turkish-backed incursion in northern Syria was going successfully and a 400 sq km area had been cleared of Islamic State and the Kurdish YPG militia force.

"More than 400 square kilometers had been cleared from terrorist organizations such as Daesh, YPG and PYD. This victory that was achieved in such a short period has shown that Free Syrian Army can fight against Daesh," Tayyip Erdogan told a news conference in capital of Ankara after the US criticized Turkey for attacking the YPG, a Syrian group Washington has backed.

The United States on Monday criticized clashes between Turkish forces and some opposition groups in northern Syria as "unacceptable" and called on all armed actors in the fighting to stand down and focus on the fight against Islamic State.
