Turkey ready to resume Israel-Syria mediation

Turkey said it is prepared to restart mediation efforts between Israel and Syria but is waiting for both countries to signal their readiness to resume talks. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Burak Ozugergin told reporters Thursday Turkey had not yet received a nod from the two countries that would allow it to initiate new talks. Last year, Turkey mediated several rounds of indirect talks between Syria and Israel, but the discussions were halted after Israel's offensive in Gaza. Syria has since said it is willing to resume talks that focus on Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights. But Israel's new prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, has said he would not be willing to cede the territory.
