UN chief praises women's voting right in Saudi Arabia

UNITED NATIONS - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hailed as an "important step" on Thursday an announcement by Saudi Arabia that women would be allowed to vote and stand in elections in the conservative kingdom.
The UN chief seldom comments on internal legislation in countries, but has billed women's rights as a major theme of his tenure.
"The secretary-general believes that these (announcements) represent an important step in the realization by women in Saudi Arabia of their fundamental civil and political rights," said a statement issued by Ban's press office.
