US Attorney-General Eric Holder will announce his resignation later on Thursday, a Justice Department official said.

The official said Holder will announce his plans to leave his post in the Obama administration at an event at the White House. Holder "has no immediate plans once he steps down," the official said.

The news was first reported by National Public Radio.
