There was a six percent fall in the number of new people requesting unemployment benefits during the month of September, according to figures published Monday by the National Insurance Institute (NII). The institute received a total of 17,000 new requests for such benefits last month, compared to the 18,000 new requests it received during the month of August. Figures from the NII show that the number of new requests is still much higher than it was this time last year but is 15% less than for the period February to April of this year. While it is too early to celebrate, this decrease is positive, said Minister of Welfare and Social Service Isaac Herzog in a statement. Overall, 92,000 people signed on for unemployment benefits in September, a 50% increase over September 2008.
