Violence, arrests at Berkeley rally

Several thousands protesters converged on to the historically progressive university town of Berkeley, California, on Sunday for a "Rally Against Hate" in response to planned right-wing rallies over the weekend that were canceled over concerns of potential violence.

Sunday's gathering nevertheless became violent after protesters from across the political left wing-right wing divide briefly scuffled together in tense altercations and as police tried to keep them apart.

At least 10 people were arrested, the local NBC News affiliate said, including for violating rules against covering the face or carrying banned items.

News helicopter video showed what appeared to be tear gas or smoke bombs which local media said were released by police after large numbers of black clad demonstrators carrying pro-anarchist banners overwhelmed a police barricade.
