Waste treatment bill approved

The Knesset approved a bill in its second and third (final) readings on Wednesday that will enable the Environmental Protection Ministry to help weaker local authorities establish waste infrastructure and evacuate pollution from their areas. The bill, which amends the Maintenance of Cleanliness Law, enables the establishment of a Maintenance of Cleanliness Fund, which the ministry can use to fund bringing such infrastructure into those local authorities for a period not exceeding one year.

“It is easier to instill a culture of waste separation and transformation of raw materials in the awareness of strong populations in Israel, but the real test is how to implement this in underserved populations,” Environmental Protection Minister Amir Peretz said, noting that a portion of the country still burned waste in a “Third World” fashion. “Today’s decision will allow us to provide resources to assist in purchasing equipment and give underserved populations [access to] the waste treatment [process], from separation to recycling.”
