Uruguay beat Mexico 1-0 with a Luiz Suarez header to finish top of Group A, but the result also proved sufficient for the losers to advance.

Joint-leaders Uruguay and Mexico went into their final group match safe in the knowledge that a draw would be sufficient for both of them to reach the knockout phase.

Although Mexico put the pressure on by bringing Javier Hernandez on for Blanco after the hour mark, Uruguay's defense looked even stronger as time wore on. Uruguay completed a hat-trick of clean sheets for the first time in their World Cup history.
