Arkia Airlines Ltd. has opened preliminary talks to acquire Montenegro Airlines, the country’s national carrier, and to invest in hotels in the Balkan country.

During a visit to Israel last week, Montenegro Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and Tourism Minister Predrag Nenezic met Arkia owner Avi Nakash and CEO Gadi Tepper about a possible deal.

Djukanovic earlier met President Shimon Peres to discuss closer bilateral economic and political relations. They discussed Middle Eastern policy issues, including Israel’s negotiations with the Palestinians and Iran’s nuclear program.

Djukanovic told Peres, “Israeli businesspeople will be welcomed in Montenegro. We’re planning intensive development in the coming years, and we’ll be pleased for Israelis to take part.”
